About us

Story About Us
Where it all began

Who We Are

Since 2006, Family Preservation and Strengthening Services (PASS) has been a community organization, based in Fairfax County, Virginia, involving volunteers and donors who share a belief that healthy communities are built on healthy families. We provide weekly, and sometimes daily, counseling to help families succeed. The families that Family PASS assists are highly motivated to regain their self-sufficiency. Most move out of our program within a year. We consider it an honor to be able to assist them. Our focus, coupled with the commitment of our clients, has helped drive our 95% success rate in keeping families housed and self-sufficient.

Transitional Housing

Family Pass works closely with emergency shelters in Fairfax County, and organizations such as Fairfax County’s Coordinated Services, Northern Virginia Family Services, Fairfax County Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services and other nonprofit organizations. Our first step is to transition families to permanent, affordable housing as quickly as we can.

Education and Workplace Skills

After addressing immediate housing concerns, we provide goal-oriented case management that connects people to community resources for gaining the education and workplace skills needed for better jobs and higher pay. Each family receives exactly the support needed to overcome their individual obstacles to independence.

Case Management

Without long-term case management and permanent housing, families leaving emergency shelters return to homelessness at a high rate. For victims of domestic abuse, the choice is often homelessness or returning to an abuser. This is why each of the services and support systems we provide, along with our case management services, is important to successfully guiding a family along a path to self-sufficiency.

Why Family Pass

High Success Rate

Our work is a continuous process, and we are proud of our 95% success rate in keeping families housed and self-sufficient.

Focus on the Basics

We focus on the need for safe, affordable housing, the need to earn a living wage, reliable transportation, and childcare—all necessary elements for our clients to achieve a sense of well-being and stability.

Culture of Inclusion

We believe that we can empower families by creating a system that is equitable and a culture of inclusion.

Family PASS is supported in part with a grant from the Consolidated Community Funding Pool of Fairfax, the Begun Foundation, corporations and businesses, and with the generous support of our local community, which provided the initial full support when Family PASS was founded.

We depend on our local community – individuals, civic group, and places of worship – for more than 39% of revenue that serves our client families.
