Carolina and George

Being Homeless with a Disability

Despite working three jobs, Carolina and her husband, George, couldn’t afford housing. For six months they had to live out of their van, hanging sheets on the windows for privacy and stopping at gas stations to wash up.

Family PASS helped George and Carolina move from their van to an apartment. A medical disability kept George from working, leaving it to his wife to support both of them. “Obtaining affordable housing was impossible,” Carolina said. The couple spent five years on the public housing wait list. “When it would be really cold, in the 20s, I’d be up most of the night keeping the van running,” said George. With help from Family PASS, they got back on track and into their own home. The couple moved into an apartment, and Carolina moved forward with her education and her career.
