A victim of domestic violence, Josephine, a single mother and the sole provider for her four children, was homeless. Despite limited English and no high school diploma, she had managed to secure a job as a home health aide, but at $8/hour, she couldn’t pay her rent and the family was placed in a temporary shelter.
Family PASS helped obtain stable housing for Josephine who was then able to focus on her children, her education, and improving her English. She enrolled in GED and ESOL classes and trained as a personal care assistant. In less than two years, Josephine became a full-time certified personal care assistant at a nursing home, a job that provided $13/hour and full benefits. She also got a part- time job at a homecare service agency that paid her $18/hour and earned her GED. Last but not least, the family was awarded permanent affordable housing through the Housing Choice Voucher program.
We love happy endings!
